RANGERS have been urged to sign Liverpool loanee Ryan Kent on a permanent deal this summer, partly because of his sell-on value.

Former Aberdeen striker Noel Whelan explained to Football.Insider that Steven Gerrard needs to take advantage of his links with his former club to make a deal.

Kent was almost sent off during Sunday’s Old Firm derby on Sunday after punching Celtic captain Scott Brown.

The incident was not seen by any of the refereeing team, however, and the winger survived to finish the game.

He could still face a two-game ban as the Scottish FA will review the incident.

Aside from that incident, Kent has shone so far this season during his loan spell at Ibrox.

In 22 Scottish Premiership appearances, he has six goals and six assists, and has emerged as a bright prospect.

On Tuesday, it was reported that Liverpool would allow the 22-year-old to leave for £7million, given that he is unlikely to break into the first-team any time soon.

And Whelan declared that Gerrard should take the gamble and sign him up in order to close the gap on Celtic.

“Get him in, he is a fantastic player,” Whelan said.

“He was the best player on the pitch on Sunday – he stood out with his willingness, desire, pace, skill and directness.

“He’s got good feet and is the kind of player you can build your attack around.

“£7million is not a lot of money if you’ve got ambitions to win the league.

“You need to buy top players, and Ryan Kent is certainly one of those.

“In three years he will be worth £12million to £15million, at least.”

Sunday’s defeat at Parkhead means that Celtic are now within touching distance of an eighth straight league title.

The Bhoys are now 13 points clear of Rangers.
