Whitaker snatches point for Macclesfield

Danny Whitaker snatched a point for Macclesfield, firing in his side’s equaliser deep into stoppage time to earn a 2-2 draw with Stevenage.
A cagey opening saw defences dominate, with only Macclesfield’s reluctance to fire at goal seeing the game remain goalless for so long.
Macclesfield winger Elliott Durrell finally broke the deadlock three minutes before the break, latching on to Michael Rose’s through-ball and slotting the ball home.
But the relegation battling hosts’ joy lasted little more than a minute, with Stevenage hitting back from a set-piece. Joel Byrom’s free kick into the box was dangerous but Sol Campbell will rue the marking that allowed Ben Nugent a free header.
And things got worse for Macc six minutes into the second half when Alex Revell knocked down a ball into the box, substitute Dan Newton turning his man and drilling low into the net.
From there, Stevenage were able to repel what little Macc offered by way of a response before Wilmslow-born Whitaker pounced in the third minute of added-on time.
