John Askey proud of Port Vale players as they ease drop fears

Port Vale boss John Askey was proud of his side’s display as they earned a 3-0 win over Yeovil at Vale Park to increase their survival hopes in League Two.

Goals from Manny Oyeleke, Tom Conlon and Cristian Montano ensured that Askey’s side secured a second win on the spin to move eight points clear of the relegation places.

Askey said: “The confidence is flowing through the team and long may it continue.

“I thought right from the off again, we played very well, it was difficult to play from the off because of the wind, but we played good football.

“I thought the players have been terrific and the goal that Tom (Conlon) scored was one of the best you will see, and I’m really pleased that goals are coming from all over the pitch, with all our goals coming from midfield.

“It is a relief as much as anything, when you start with the games that we played and the decisions have gone against us, but in the long run it has done us good and we are really pleased.

“The gap is eight points now, so we just have to concentrate on ourselves, keep winning games, keep performing and if we do that, then I think we will be fine.”

The Valiants were ahead on 26 minutes when Oyeleke powered his header in to the bottom-right corner following David Worrall’s floated corner from the right.

Vale’s lead was doubled through Conlon with 62 minutes played, as the midfielder unleashed a thumping left-footed drive from 25-yards which dipped beyond Glovers’ keeper Nathan Baxter.

Substitute Montano wrapped up a comfortable performance after 84 minutes when he guided his left-footed strike from inside the six-yard box after Worrall’s free-kick from the right dropped to him at the back post.

Yeovil boss Darren Way said: “We got beat by the better team, I thought they out worked us, they out fought us, they had more determination and desire and it is important that the players now understand some of the inconsistent performances that they have shown.

“We were not good enough dealing with first or second balls, dealing with pressure and taking responsibility.

“We knew it wasn’t going to be easy coming here with the environment, the weather and the crowd on top of you, but I expected a bit more from my team tonight, I expected more fight from us.

“It’s disappointing but it is what I expect from my players who have not turned up at Port Vale away and not dealt with the environment, their players wanted it more than us, it is simple.

“We have got good players at this club but unfortunately, we performed poorly, and we must address those issues that we faced.”
