Barnsley boss Stendel frustrated after Sunderland draw

Barnsley head coach Daniel Stendel felt his side outplayed Sunderland as the sides fought out a 0-0 draw amid a tense atmosphere at Oakwell.

Just a few minutes in, Barnsley created the first chance through Mamadou Thiam when he was through on goal but Jon McLaughlin was quick off his line and turned the ball over the bar.

Shortly after, Sunderland’s Max Power cut in from the left aimed a curling effort towards goal only to be denied by Adam Davies.

The best chance came just before half time when Thiam wriggled his way into the box, switched the ball on to his left but his effort came agonisingly back off the bar.

Barnsley thought they had taken the lead when Cauley Woodrow headed in Alex Mowatt’s cross from close range, only to be flagged for offside.

Stendel said: “It was a closer game than we expected. First half we had chances to go in front, twice through Mamadou (Thiam).

“It was difficult conditions for us, it was difficult second half, Sunderland played a lot of long balls and they had two chances to score.

“I think we were a little bit better than Sunderland today, but in the end no-one scored so it’s a draw, we can keep the gap. The goal was to win, but we are satisfied.

“At half time we spoke about the wind and in the first half we had the chance to use that advantage and we shot more from distance. I think it was difficult for the goalkeeper.

“In the last minutes we tried to win, but we could not score. A draw for both teams is okay.

“It’s not only today, it’s the whole of the season we’ve defended very well. We’ve had a lot of clean sheets, particularly in recent weeks. It’s very good from all the players in the team.”

Sunderland manager Jack Ross said: “We wanted to win the game, that’s what we came here to do, but all the planning and the work you do just goes out the window when you play in conditions like tonight.

“It was really tough to play in particularly when you’re playing against it (wind) in the first half.

“When you take into consideration the level of opponent we’re playing against, they’re a good a side having a very good season, we’ll take the point and move on.

“Jon’s (McLaughlin) kicks were always coming back at him and they the way Barnsley played, how positive they were and the energy they played with how they press the game it helps them do that.

“Getting to half time on level terms was satisfying for us because we knew it would give us a platform to win it second half. We tried to do that, but even then it’s not easy to be fluid in attack.”
