REAL MADRID boss Zinedine Zidane has poured cold water on suggestions Cristiano Ronaldo could return to the club.

The Frenchman returned to the Bernabeu earlier today as Santiago Solari's replacement, less than a year after quitting the club.

Zidane is expected to be handed a hefty summer transfer budget as Real look to put their miserable campaign behind them.

Ronaldo left for Juventus last summer in an £88m deal and there have been suggestions that he could be set for a sensational return.

But Zidane has refused to discuss transfers, insisting he is only focused on his side's remaining matches.

"That is not today's issue," he said when asked if Ronaldo could return.

"We have 11 games to play, then we will see for next years.

"We all know Cristiano, the history of this club, one of the best.

"But today is not for talking about these things."

Zidane guided Real to three consecutive Champions Leagues and one La Liga title before stepping down.

The Spanish giants suffered a shock European exit to Ajax last week and are currently 12 points behind Barcelona in La Liga.

Zidane has been tasked with steadying the ship ahead of a summer rebuild.

And the former midfielder has revealed why he chose to return to the Bernabeu.

"I had various offers, but did not want to go to any other club," he continued.

"I wanted to stay here.

"My heart tells me that I have rested for these months, and when Real Madrid president is calling, I want to return.

"Maybe after four months it would not have been like that, but now I really do.

"I am looking forward to this second project, with the president, the club and the fans.

"It is a great challenge, I know that, but I am really looking forward to it, to returning to coach."
