Back-to-back defeats against Barcelona have left Real Madrid with only the Champions League to focus on this season and a fourth European title in five years will be the only consolation that will allow for this failure of a season to be remembered as anything other than a disaster.

The reality for Madrid at the moment is that the players are hurt, and differences are beginning to show between the dressing room and coach.

Santiago Solari gave Gareth Bale a chance, which was not expected by the majority of the group as the distance between the Welshman and his teammates continues to grow and many players did not understand his inclusion in the starting eleven.

What happened at Levante was no more than evidence of a problem that exists at Madrid.

Bale didn't wait until the game finished

Solari started Bale over Lucas Vazquez and Marco Asensio but when he was withdrawn the Bernabeu whistled him loudly.

After just a few minutes on the bench beside Marcelo, Bale set off for the dressing room and from there he went home, not even waiting until the game had ended.

In a desperate attempt to reverse the situation, Solari threw on Isco, who had been nowhere near his plans for the previous months.

There has been a lot of self-criticism since the double defeat for allowing Barcelona, who themselves are some way from their best, to win twice at the Bernabeu without trouble.

Solari has trusted players like Vinicius Junior and Sergio Reguilon, while dropping Marcelo, Bale, Isco and even Asensio.

The club are keeping calm and patient, continuing to believe in the players and hold onto the hope of another European success story.

But the decision will come soon and it needs to. If Madrid are knocked out against Ajax on Tuesday, then the signs will be even clearer that something has to change.
