Darren Way hailed Yeovil’s fight after win over Cambridge

Yeovil manager Darren Way praised his side’s fight after they ended a run of six successive Sky Bet League Two defeats with a 1-0 win over Cambridge at Huish Park.

A first Glovers goal for Courtney Duffus after 25 minutes was enough to secure all three points and move Yeovil three points clear of the drop zone.

“I’m proud, honoured and I respect what the team’s done,” said Way.

“You just have to keep fighting. Our body language was full of confidence and energy. The foundations of this football club since I’ve been here is fight, fight and fight even harder and we sure had to do that.

“I thought the players played with confidence. They were strong with the ball.”

Duffus scored on his first start for the club and was among five changes, which included starting forward Yoann Arquin in central defence and a Football League debut for teenager Daniel Ojo.

“It was probably the bravest team selection I’ve made. Certainly with the pressure the club is under to get results. But boy did they perform,” Way added.

“It probably would have turned a few heads upside down, thinking the manager had gone crazy.

“I think that’s the future of this football club. All I ask for is patience for these young players from the supporters and get behind them and I thought they did that today. There was a different feel around the place.”

Cambridge boss Colin Calderwood felt it was a missed opportunity for his team.

“There was more than enough play away from home against a team that are very close to us to want and deserve more than we’ve got,” Calderwood said.

“We’ve missed a real opportunity here. I think we were way better than we were the other night (a 2-0 loss at Cheltenham). If ever there was a game where we think we deserve to score it was probably today.

“It became a little bit anxious and frantic towards the end of the second half.

“The way they scored the goal we’ve probably had close to nine or ten of those moments. We’ve had opportunities to make the game level. We didn’t take it.

“Really disappointed about the goal of course because it puts us behind and gives them a foothold in the game. The extra numbers that they had just caught us out a little bit and we weren’t matched up in that area.

“Everyone moved to the ball a step and they left the striker free and it’s rolled to him. It was preventable.”
