ARSENAL boss Unai Emery must get the best out of Mesut Ozil or risk getting sacked like Jose Mourinho at Manchester United.

That is the opinion of Liverpool legend and Sky Sports pundit Steve McMahon.

Mesut Ozil has fallen out of favour at Arsenal since Emery replaced Arsene Wenger as head coach last summer.

The German World Cup winner is the club’s highest earner on a reported £350,000-a-week.

However, he has played just one Premier League match since the Boxing Day draw at Brighton.

Ozil has struggled with illness and injury but has also been left out for tactical reasons.

McMahon says it is not acceptable for Emery not to attempt to get the best out of the 30-year-old.

And he claims Mourinho was sacked by United for similar reasons in December.

"When you've got world-class players, which undoubtedly he is, you have to play him and find a way to get the best out of him,” McMahon said.

“That's why you're the manager, that's why Jose Mourinho was sacked for not getting the best out of the Manchester United players.

"£350,000 a week? I've got to get the best out of you. And that's your job.

“You can't just say he wasn't my signing and palm it off onto Wenger, you have to deal with it."

Ozil could return to the Arsenal squad for the Europa League last-32 second leg against BATE Borisov on Thursday.

At his pre-match press conference on Wednesday, Emery said it was down to the midfielder to prove he should play a more prominent role for his team.

"He needs to be consistent in training and for matches, without injury or being sick," Emery said.

"Like that, we can see the best Mesut with us.

"The key is in his hands and he is working very well this week."

Arsenal could be without Ainsley Maitland-Niles for the visit of BATE due to illness.
