Barnsley boss Stendel salutes two-goal Woodrow

Barnsley head coach Daniel Stendel praised “leader” Cauley Woodrow after his double helped earn a 2-1 win over Wycombe.

Woodrow scored the opener from the penalty spot in the 13th minute after Luke Bolton fouled Mike Bahre and made it two shortly after the hour mark, firing into the roof of the net after good work from Ryan Hedges and Jacob Brown.

Wycombe skipper Adam El-Abd was sent off deep into stoppage time following an off-the-ball incident involving Cameron McGeehan.

But the 10 men scored a consolation at the death through Joe Jacobson’s penalty after Ethan Pinnock fouled Scott Kashket.

Stendel, whose second-placed side now have a five-point cushion over Portsmouth in third in League One, said: “It was a very good three points, especially following the draw for Sunderland and Portsmouth. It was difficult, but we won.

“I’m happy about his (Woodrow’s) performance today, especially after the injury for Kieffer Moore. We need his goals and he takes his responsibility. He played very well today and he’s a leader in our team.

“I think the confidence is very high after the last weeks. It is important that we win our games then it doesn’t matter what other teams do.”

Wycombe boss Gareth Ainsworth admitted his team had lost to a “good side”.

“They’ve got some Championship players in their team,” he said.

“On the whole, they probably edged it today and the result says that. They had some good chances on our goal and ours were few and far between.

“We’ve given a real good account of ourselves and I think at the end of the game, the Barnsley fans wanted the final whistle a lot more than the Wycombe fans, which is a good sign.

“I thought we started the game well but it was a sloppy goal to concede. Luke (Bolton) is devastated with that. He says he got a toe on the ball and the boy’s gone over his foot. That’s how it goes sometimes.

“You’ve got to give credit to Barnsley. I think Daniel has set his team up with respect to us today. The way they played, they were really on it and they deserved their win.”
