Shakers a ‘different class’ – Lowe

Bury boss Ryan Lowe said his players were a “different class’’ as they held on for a 3-2 victory over a battling Morecambe at the Globe Arena.

Lowe had seen his side race into a three-goal lead only for Morecambe to hit back with two goals in five minutes to leave the Shakers with a nervous finish.

Lowe said: “I was a bit concerned at times towards the end but credit where it is due as we saw it out.

“We have spirit and passion in abundance in the dressing room and we had to show that today to get the points.

“We were different class at times and some of our goals were outstanding and if Liverpool or Barcelona scored our third goal it would be talked about all week.

“But they were then given a really soft penalty and added a second soon after and that changed things. They were always going to have a go which we knew they would.

“They put us under a lot of pressure and we had to show a very different side to our game but we did the right things and we had to spoil the game at times.

“In the end it was pretty comfortable and it was a good win and another good three points especially away from home.”

Morecambe manager Jim Bentley praised his side’s spirited comeback but admitted his players gave Bury a helping hand.

He said: “We gave it a good go but at times today we beat ourselves and at other times quality told.

“They are a good side and they are where they are for a reason and in Danny Mayor have the best player in the division for me “We made it too easy for him to get into the position to score his first goal and gifted them a second with a mistake from Steven Old and then they scored a third after a great run again from Mayor who just glided through the pitch to set up O’Shea perfectly for their third.

“There was a danger then that the game could run away from us but I have to give the lads credit after that though as they gave it a right good go and put them under real pressure at the end but we just couldn’t get another chance despite giving it everything.”

Morecambe started brightly but Mayor fired the visitors into the lead with a superb curling finish on 17 minutes from the left hand side of the box.

The goal saw Bury take control with Mayor firing inches wide and Nicky Maynard denied by a good save from Mark Halstead.

The visitors added a second in first half injury time when Maynard teed up O’Shea who finished smartly from the edge of the box.

Bury scored their third on the hour with a goal inspired by Mayor again who drove through the Morecambe midfield before finding O’Shea who produced another fine finish.

Morecambe’s comeback started when Richie Bennett won a penalty after being fouled by Nicky Adams. Joe Murphy saved Jordan Cranston’s spot kick but Bennett followed up to slam home the loose ball.

Five minutes later Steven Old pulled another one back for the home side with a fine header from Cranston’s cross but despite their best efforts the Shrimps could not get a leveller and O’Shea was denied a hat-trick at the other end by a fine Halstead save.
