Daniel Stendel: We could have scored more

Head coach Daniel Stendel felt Barnsley could have scored more as they stretched their unbeaten League One run to 10 games with a 2-0 win at home to Scunthorpe.

Alex Mowatt and Cameron McGeehan scored to secure victory for the Tykes.

Stendel said: “I think we played our game very well. In the second half I think we could have scored more than the two goals, but we can save the goals for the next match.

“In the five minutes before half-time we were not 100 per cent concentrated, but the other 85 minutes we were the better team.

“We were good in front of goal and created a lot of chances.

“We spoke before this game that we wanted to work more against the ball, like the last games, and I think the players did that.

“Alex’s performance was so good today. At the moment he and Cameron McGeehan in the centre of midfield are playing so good.

“They worked very hard against the ball, created a lot of chances and I’m very happy with such players in our team.”

Scunthorpe manager Stuart McCall admitted his team were beaten by “a good, good side” but felt the Iron should have had penalty for a foul on Adam Hammill shortly before the Reds countered to open the scoring.

He said: “They were the better side on the day, there’s no doubt about that. But decisions change games.

“I wasn’t overwhelmed with how well we started because we wanted to be better in possession, but we were reasonably comfortable.

“It’s a big decision, it’s a penalty kick, the boy has taken Hammill out, everyone saw that.

“Ten seconds later, the lad has hit a screamer from 40 yards.

“Any other day it would have been food and drink for (goalkeeper) Jak (Alnwick), but because of the sun it has swerved and he’s just not seen it.

“The second goal, for as good as Barnsley played, it’s a fortuitous goal. There’s a shot, it’s blocked, it’s flicked up and McGeehan’s headed it in.

“We wanted to carry a threat, we didn’t just want to sit and play 5-4-1 because we know how good a side they are at home.

“I thought we did that and there were times I thought we had a goal in us, but every time we opened up they hit us on the counter-attack.”
