Adams happy as Lameiras double improves Plymouth’s survival hopes

Plymouth boss Derek Adams expressed his delight after the Pilgrims made it three Sky Bet League One wins in a row with a 2-1 comeback win over Coventry.

Adams, whose side edged up to 21st, said: “We’ve put three good wins together and closed the gap between ourselves and the ones above us as only two teams out of the bottom eight won today.”

Former Coventry forward Ruben Lameiras was the Argyle hero, scoring twice after Conor Chaplin had fired City ahead from a 55th-minute free-kick.

Lameiras levelled in the 63rd minute with a superb strike before smashing the 70th-minute winner, his sixth goal in four unbeaten games.

Adams said: “Coventry are sitting in a position where they feel they can come out and attack.

“We’ve put ourselves in a position where we can go for it as well, so there were a number of good opportunities for both sides.

“We have had 21 attempts on goal and the better opportunities throughout the 90 minutes.

“Ruben obviously left Coventry and we were lucky enough to get him.

“He came up with two very good goals and was probably unfortunate not to get a hat-trick today.

“As I said before the game he is in the form of his career at the moment, he is scoring goals and creating opportunities for other people.”

Adams continued: “Ruben is probably most people’s man of the match because he got the two goals.

“Kyle Letheren did well in goal and there were a lot of very good performances again.

“We’ve gone unbeaten now in four games and feel we should have probably been unbeaten for longer.

“There are only four teams that play on Tuesday night, so from that point of view we have put ourselves in a better position.

“We are looking forward to playing Walsall at home now.”

Sky Blues boss Mark Robins said: “I have learnt a lot about football today. It is tough to take.

“We are a team that are nearly very good and they have to find it within themselves to become very good because we create loads of chances.

“Conor put a worldy free-kick into the top corner but all of our other chances went begging.

“Plymouth had four chances in the game and two of them have gone in the net.

“We need to work our way through it and things need to improve on the ‘chances taken’ front. They have got to shake those shackles off.

Robins added: “We were so unfortunate in the first half.

“Their keeper was probably man of the match. We know Ruben is in a rich vein of form and is a capable player. Once he has got the first one their tails were up.

“It was a decent game of football that we were bossing. But you know as soon as you take your foot off the gas, and drop 10 yards, we are going to be in trouble.

“We allowed their front players to have some joy. It is frustrating and we should be saying ‘what a brilliant performance’. We should have had five or six goals.”
