Bury boss Ryan Lowe takes credit for developing Nicky Maynard’s finishing touch

Ryan Lowe waxed lyrical about the part he played in Nicky Maynard’s late winner as title-chasing Bury came from behind at Forest Green.

Former Premier League striker Maynard popped up with just seven minutes left on the clock to make it four wins in a row for the Shakers, leaving Lowe to remind him of his early days at Crewe.

He quipped: “It was a great finish, but I taught Nicky (Maynard) his finishing at Crewe all those years ago.”

Rovers started positively when Carl Winchester picked the pocket of the Callum McFadzean inside six minutes, and despite the Bury defender retreating to block, the free ball fell to Christian Doidge but his chip landed on the roof of the net with visiting goalkeeper Joe Murphy well beaten.

Bury then trailed after Reece Brown had given play-off chasing Rovers the lead in the 28th minute before the visitors turned the tables with Jay O’Shea equalising and Maynard winning it for the Shakers with a fine finsih.

And Lowe heaped praise on his side, adding: “The lads have been class for us and it’s another win.

“It was a massively important win for us, especially away from home.

“It was a poor first half, we know Forest Green are a good passing side, but we turned it round at half time.”

Bury’s comeback win condemn Forest Green to their first defeat in seven matches, much to the angst of boss Mark Cooper.

“The performance was outstanding, and the game should have been won at half time,” he said.

“We scored a goal through Reece Brown and then Carl Winchester goes through one-on-one and he fails to get a shot off and George Williams does the same and after that, we didn’t manage the game properly.

“Now it’s about results, they have to see it through and win the game. We were so dominant, and we needed to score another goal and once you don’t get one, you start to get edgy and turn the ball over and what happens can happen.

“The first goal, the man has ran from the halfway line – goes beyond two of our players on the touchline – he should never get that far – and he runs across the box and no-one tackles him – and he shoots into the corner.

“For the second, we let Danny Mayor inside on his right and Maynard is facing his own goal and gets the chance to touch and shoot – and I think we should stop it – and I think the goalkeeper should save it.”
