Eden Hazard inching ever closer to becoming the newest icon at Real Madrid

After Chelsea took a staunch stance that Eden Hazard wouldn't follow Thibaut Courtois out of the exit door at Stamford Bridge in the summer of 2018, the Belgian forward is now inching ever closer to becoming the newest icon at Real Madrid.

Ever since Cristiano Ronaldo left the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu, the European champions have lacked a reference point on the pitch, and they've been left disappointed by the fact the players trusted to take the place of Ronaldo have underperformed this season.

Florentino Perez felt that Marco Asensio, Gareth Bale and Isco would be able to make up the shortfall left behind by Ronaldo's departure to Juventus, yet injuries and poor form have put paid to such a belief.

Hazard remains determined to sign for Los Blancos and has rejected Chelsea's renewed attempts to tie him down to a long-term contract, with his current deal due to expire in June 2020.

After putting in a starring role during Belgium's run to the 2018 World Cup semi-final, Hazard is in no doubt as to where he wants to be playing his football in the 2019/20 season.

Real Madrid have been his dream since his time with Lille, and he intends to reject any other offers which come his way before the start of next season.

The Belgian doesn't want to disrupt Chelsea's season and will wait until the end of the season before forcing a move; the Spanish giants also don't wish to go to war with the Blues by attempting to unsettle Hazard in January, even if they could do with an attacking reinforcement immediately.

Chelsea are acutely aware of Hazard's desire to move to the Spanish capital, and with the FA Cup holders determined to recoup a fee for such a talented player, Marina Granovskaia will be forced to negotiate with Real Madrid at the end of the season.

100 million euros is the asking price set by Chelsea, although Madrid hope they can adjust that somewhat due to the fact Hazard will only have one year left on his contract by the time negotiations begin.

Granovskaia, though, will point to the transfers of Paul Pogba and Neymar to indicate just how the market has shifted and will attempt to stand firm on their 100m euro valuation, irrespective of the Belgian's contractual situation.

Those in power at Valdebebas believe that the 28-year-old can quickly become one of the leaders of a team that will undergo drastic surgery in the summer transfer window.
