AC MILAN manager Gennaro Gattuso has admitted talks are ongoing with Gonzalo Higuain’s representatives amid speculation over a move to Chelsea.

Chelsea are keen to sign a striker in the January transfer window with manager Maurizio Sarri exasperated with Alvaro Morata and Olivier Giroud's struggles in front of goal.

Sarri is well aware of Higuain’s quality having managed him for a season at Napoli, with the striker scoring 36 goals in 35 Serie A appearances.

Bournemouth’s Callum Wilson and West Ham’s Marko Arnautovic have also been linked with Chelsea.

But Sarri has told the Chelsea board that his preference would be Higuain.

Higuain, who is on loan at Milan from Juventus, has scored just six Serie A goals this season.

And the Argentina star has been visibly frustrated at times with his team-mates.

Speaking in a press conference, Gattuso opened up about the “chatter” surrounding Higuain and said he was confident the striker would remain professional.

Gattuso said: “There are some chatter about him at the moment, but I see how he trains, the availability that he gives me and the professionalism he puts in.

“The rest are his own things, his brother, his attorney who talks to Leonardo, I hope he stays as long as possible, if it does not, we'll see.

“Professionalism for me will not be a problem.”

In his pre-match press conference, Sarri was asked for an update about Chelsea’s pursuit of Higuain and the Italian gave little away.

He told reporters: “As you know very well I am not involved with the market.

“I spoke with the club and they know very well my opinion we need two players and then it depends on the club decision.

“But I don’t know anything about the market day by day or minute by minute.”

When pressed on the two players he wants, Sarri added: “As you can understand very well I cannot tell you but the club knows very well my opinion.

“At the moment my opinion is important for the club but I cannot tell you my opinion to 100 per cent.”
