Stendel hails Barnsley performance after beating Charlton

Barnsley head coach Daniel Stendel praised his team’s performance after they beat promotion rivals Charlton 2-1 following early goals from Brad Potts and Mamadou Thiam.

A good move down the right saw Barnsley open the scoring inside the fourth minute. Cauley Woodrow’s cross was played back by Thiam to Potts, who smashed his first-time shot past Jed Steer.

Steer was called into action to save Cameron McGeehan’s 25-yard effort before the hosts went further ahead in the 14th minute.

The goal came when Thiam received the ball around 25 yards out and advanced before arrowing a shot into the top left-hand corner of Steer’s net.

Ben Reeves (73) reduced the arrears with a clinical finish after Tarique Fosu’s free-kick came back off the defensive wall, but the visitors were unable to force an equaliser.

Charlton’s Chris Solly was then sent off in stoppage time following a second booking.

Stendel said: “I’m very happy. It was a good performance against a good team.

“It was very close at the end but we deserved to win. I’m happy for the club, the supporters and my team that we win this game.

“Both goals were very good. We told ‘Pottsy’ and Mamadou that we needed them to be more ruthless in front of goal in this game and I’m very happy that both scored.

“I have a lot of trust in my team. When we need to fight, we can fight.

“It’s hard sometimes but all the teams are in the same situation and it’s good that we can end this year winning games. It gives the players a lot of confidence.

“We have an important game on Tuesday so we didn’t want to risk Kieffer (Moore). We need Kieffer in the next games.”

Charlton boss Lee Bowyer said: “I feel for them because I don’t feel we deserve to leave with nothing. I think that with the effort they’ve put in, they deserve something.

“In the first half, two great unstoppable strikes. That’s all it was. Apart from the goals, I think Jed made maybe one more save.

“Other than that, I thought we had a lot of control of the possession at times. I can’t remember them hurting us.

“In the second half, especially, we obviously scored. In the first half we had some good chances but the final ball at times let us down.

“I feel sorry for the lads because they’ve given me everything. We’re just unfortunate at the moment.

“Solly has got a second yellow and I thought it was harsh. He won the ball and you can’t control where you’re going after you’ve won the ball.”
