Clough delighted with Burton’s character shown in beating Wycombe

Burton manager Nigel Clough watched his side come from a goal down to beat Wycombe Wanderers 3-1 at the Pirelli Stadium thanks to a brace of goals from Lucas Akins and one from David Templeton.

After Jake Buxton had sliced Joe Jacobson’s cross into his own net just before the half-hour mark, two goals in as many minutes saw Albion turn the game around thanks to Akins’ first of the afternoon and Templeton’s strike.

“We are delighted” said Clough. “When you have lost four out of five league games, it’s all about just getting the three points.

“I thought we deserved it over the course of the game.

“The most pleasing thing is having gone 1-0 down to a slice of misfortune with Jake scoring the own goal, we bounced back in brilliant style scoring three goals before half-time.

“It was nice that our good play was rewarded for a change with some good finishes.”

Albion completed the scoring in first half stoppage time when Akins fired in from a cross from the impressive play of Marcus Harness on the wing.

“We played very well in the first half,” the Albion manager continued.

“We wanted to get David Templeton on at home but we knew that he wouldn’t last the game so that was a problem but we felt, a justified one because we wanted to win and he got us an important goal. Lucas Akins led the line brilliantly today and deserved his goals.

“This was a very important game for us today. As well as needing a win after recent results, it’s Boxing Day and it is always important to win in front of your own supporters.

“It was vital to get three points today and send us into another home game on Saturday in good spirits.”

For Wycombe boss Gareth Ainsworth it was a third game without a win and he had no complaints about the result despite having a piece of good fortune to give his side the lead.

“We didn’t deserve to be leading if I am honest,” Ainsworth said having watched Buxton put through his own net.

“We created a couple of things in the first half but not too much.

“If we put one of those away it might have been a different story, but the two goals just before half-time have killed us.

“You can’t defend like we did today in the first half and expect to win games.

“That was criminal but credit to Burton, they have got a great manager and this is a team that was in the Championship last year. We have to put it into perspective because we were League Two last year.

“I’m not going to be able to do much business in January. We have to fight and scrap for every point and when my season’s total (points) starts with a five, that is when I will be happy.”
