Boss Daniel Stendel bemoans Barnsley’s poor finishing

Barnsley head coach Daniel Stendel was disappointed with his side’s finishing as they battled to a hard-fought 1-1 draw with Portsmouth.

Pompey took the lead through Gareth Evans before Cauley Woodrow equalised for the hosts.

Stendel said: “The performance was very good.

“Our plan against Portsmouth was good as we outplayed them most of the time. Only the result was not what we wanted, I think we more than deserved to win this game. It’s the only point I’m not satisfied with.

“We wanted to shoot a lot of times in this game. It was a target for us to shoot more, but too often it was too close to the goalkeeper.

“His performance was good but I think the shots were not far enough in the corner and sometimes too easy to save for him.

“We have 25 games (remaining) and it’s not the best. We are not in the top six in the table but we cannot change.

“All we can do is play with the same passion like today and I think for sure after the next game we’ļl get in the top six.

“For me it’s not much different, playing the side that’s top of the league or Wycombe. We want to win every game and every time we don’t win, I’m disappointed.”

Portsmouth manager Kenny Jackett said: “I was pleased with a point, although we did take the lead I was pleased because it was a difficult game.

“They’ve had a free week and we haven’t. A third game in a week sometimes when it’s at home can be difficult, but we did well and I was pleased with a point.

“The second half, the conditions probably took over for a little bit. The first period when they aŗe going into their end, they’re very strong, Barnsley.

“I’m pleased with my players, our attitude was excellent. With the right combination up front we could have been in a lot of good situations and that’s what we need to learn.

“We feel at times we need to get one player maybe closer to (Oli) Hawkins to give us a little bit of a threat on the break and for Ronan Curtis or Jamal Lowe that can really help our attacking threat, because on a day like today you’re going to be under pressure.

“In terms of a break you need to have a threat and we kept that all the way through.”
