Mark Bonner bemoans missed opportunity as Cambridge draw with Yeovil

Interim Cambridge boss Mark Bonner was frustrated by his side’s inability to find a winner against Yeovil.

The League Two strugglers shared a goalless draw, leaving the U’s one point above of the relegation zone and their opponents only two further clear.

Reflecting on the match afterwards, Bonner said: “Very frustrating in the sense that we haven’t found a way through.

“Fair play to everyone that came out on a day like today and were really patient with us for what was not a great spectacle to watch.

“Clearly the conditions had a huge effect on it. You can see that in the flight of the ball a number of times, but also we have to take some responsibility that in those moments we’ve got to be a bit better, a bit braver.

“I thought we were more so in the second half.

“We carved out one or two opportunities and I thought we might nick it against a team that came to frustrate us, get a point, and probably go away really happy, happier than we do.

“Where we are at the moment we know we need wins, but we have to use today as a platform to build from.

“We have to say we lost last week, we’ve come back this week and made sure we didn’t get beaten, we’ve kept a clean sheet and we have to use it to build on going to Morecambe next week.

“(I’m) Disappointed to not win it but to take something from it is important because every point might matter.”

Yeovil boss Darren Way praised his side’s grit after they ended a run of four straight losses.

“It was very difficult to get the ball down and play but I have to be pleased with the performance, players limiting mistakes,” Way said.

“In possession we wanted a little bit more but out of possession, to keep a clean sheet at Cambridge is something I don’t think I’ve done as manager.

“I respect the players. It’s been a very difficult week with my number two (Terry Skiverton) stepping down, but I feel proud of my players today.

“In both halves, whichever way you were going if you played the ball forward the ball changed three or four times with the pace of the wind. With the rain as well, that dismantled the pattern and flow of an entertaining game.

“It’s important with where we are in the league and the run of form that we’ve been on to come away from home and give a solid display.

“Whether it’s a performance in possession that we’re proud of, probably not, but having said that there were a lot of factors that influenced that.”
