Michael Duff takes positives after Cheltenham drop late points at Port Vale

Cheltenham boss Michael Duff took the positives as his side conceded late on to draw 2-2 away at Port Vale.

Antony Kay’s late winner was a kick in the teeth for Duff’s Gloucestershire outfit, who had turned the game on its head to lead through strikes from Sam Jones and Nigel Atangana following Cristian Montano’s opener for the hosts.

But despite dropping two points, Duff was pleased with the manner in which his team played.

He said: “It is a point away from home and we will take it, it was tough for us today in tough conditions.

“We are disappointed, but we can take the positives out of that performance today, we are improving.

“We can see how we want to play, how we want to set up but it is a sign that progression is being made, we were the better team all round today.

“I don’t like saying it, but performances will give you results, and I’ll take those performances any which way possible.

“If we keep performing like that over the next 25 or 26 games, then I think we will be okay.”

Montano finished some fine passing play when he converted Luke Hannant’s cross from the left past goalkeeper Scott Flinders from close-range.

Duff’s side equalised after 26 minutes when Jones was on hand to divert the ball in from inside the six-yard box after Ryan Broom’s attempt was only pushed out by Brown.

Atangana guided his low right-footed 88th-minute strike which crept into Brown’s bottom-right corner.

But Kay was the hero of the hour for Vale as he thumped in a header from Tom Conlon’s corner at the death to secure a dramatic point for Port Vale.

Meanwhile, Vale manager Neil Aspin hopes that his side can prepare themselves ahead of a busy run of Festive fixtures.

Aspin said: “You have to take every game on its merit and prepare properly for every game, as we have three games against teams, Macclesfield, Grimsby and then Oldham, who all won their games today.

“If the elements are there, you have to take them, if you get in front, it can backfire, but I’d always prefer to be in front than chasing the game.

“I told the players that if we had the win in the first half, to use it to our advantage and kick with the wind as we knew how much the game could possibly change.”
