MANCHESTER UNITED manager Jose Mourinho has aimed a dig at Liverpool and their manager Jurgen Klopp, saying “trophies matter”.

United take on Liverpool this Sunday hoping to end their bitter rivals’ unbeaten start to the season.

The Reds sit atop the Premier League and boast a 16-point lead over United, whose priority has turned to securing a top four spot.

The Red Devils have won 13 league titles since Liverpool won their last, but the Merseyside club are primed to claim their first top-flight title since it was re-branded as the Premier League in 1992.

For all of Jurgen Klopp’s transformative work at Melwood, the side are yet to secure silverware under their charismatic German tactician, losing in three major cup finals.

In comparison, Mourinho delivered the Europa League and League Cup to placate fans in his first year, but the Old Trafford faithful’s patience is wearing thin as his negative style is no longer bearing to results.

When asked ahead of the cross-city showdown this weekend about Liverpool’s threadbare trophy cabinet this decade, Mourinho said: “I don't know if trophies matter, it depends on the way you approach it.

"I think trophies matter, yeah, especially when you have the potential to fight for the trophies and especially when you clearly say the objective is to win the trophy.

“I think sometimes to say just to say is not very intelligent.

"But when you have the potential you have nothing to hide, you know from day one that your potential and your desire has a relation with the potential, because to say we want to win - everyone can say that.

"Another thing is to say in a conscious way in relation to the potential you have. I don't read much but I think Jurgen told already that their objective is to win the Premier League."

Klopp’s Liverpool have not yet been able to defeat Mourinho’s United in five league matches, drawing three and losing two.

Furthermore, Liverpool have not scored against their rivals at Anfield while Klopp has been at the helm.

It would be a turn up for the books if the same happens on Sunday, with Liverpool scoring in all bar one game in the league this season - a 0-0 draw against title challengers Manchester City.

Mourinho has faced Liverpool as a manager more than any other English club and has a good record at Anfield, losing just two one of eight league visits.

In the past two seasons his United side, epitomised by their big-game defensive approach, have secured successive 0-0 draws.

Mourinho has copped some stick for lessening the spectacle of the games, but retorted: “I don’t know what to say to you, I don’t want to analyse that, we got two positive results in Liverpool last season.

"We beat them at home, we didn’t lose any match against them in four I think but that was the past.

“So Sunday has nothing to do with what happened in the past so I have to focus not on what happened, not on the credit we were given or no.

“I have to focus on the next match, the next match is the one that is important and that’s it.
