Bowyer lauds ‘outstanding’ Charlton for ending Portsmouth’s winning streak

Charlton manager Lee Bowyer labelled his side “outstanding” after the Addicks beat ten-man Portsmouth 2-1 to end the League One leaders’ eight-game winning streak.

First-half strikes from Karlan Grant and substitute Nicky Ajose dashed Pompey’s hopes of a new post-war club record of nine successive victories. Kenny Jackett’s side also finished with ten men after Ben Thompson saw red late on.

Bowyer said: “I thought first half we dominated the ball. We knew we couldn’t come here and compete physically from the start.

“You can see why they are top, they are good at what they do and you can see how they get results.

“Once we got the ball we kept it well and had to out-pass them first half. The second half was difficult, they flooded the box hitting long diagonals playing for second balls.

“Our back four and keeper just defended so well. I don’t know how many headers they won, they’ll have a headache in the morning.

“If we can just take care of that final bit and score one more it’s game over but that’s not like us. They were outstanding today.”

Charlton took the lead on 23 minutes when Lyle Taylor crossed for Grant to slide in and score at the back post.

Ajose, on for the injured Grant, made it 2-0 two minutes before half-time with another close range effort.

Pompey pulled a goal back on 88 minutes when Andre Green converted from Gareth Evans’ cross.

Their hopes of a dramatic late comeback were dashed when Millwall loanee Ben Thompson was shown a red card in stoppage time for a foul on the lively Taylor.

Pompey boss Jackett said: “We were unlucky by the end not to get something out of the game. We had many chances, decisions and balls into the box that didn’t go our way.

“We needed a response in the second half as we didn’t do enough going forward for the home team in the first half.

“We played a lot more like ourselves, played with a better tempo and ultimately we were unlucky not to get something from the game.

“Charlton are a good side, they have some Championship quality players. We didn’t get to grips with them and give them enough problems.

“I had a good view of the red card, I thought it was a harsh one. It was two committed players going in, they both went in equally hard, low and for the ball and I was surprised when the red card came out. It was right in front of me and we will be appealing.

“The players felt there were decisions right the way through but whether the ball was out or not for the second goal, or a penalty, he hasn’t given it so we move on.”
