The Portuguese coach was adamant that he needed a new centre-back in the summer, with the likes of Toby Alderweireld, Harry Maguire and Diego Godin all linked.

But United officials refused to give in to the manager’s demands, citing a lack of funds as a reason not to adhere to his wishes.

And since then, Mourinho has been proved right - the Red Devils have been in dire need of a centre-back after having to play Nemanja Matic and Scott McTominay in defence at times because of injury troubles.

The United board were not completely frugal though, spending £52m on Fred - though the Brazilian has been used sparingly by The Special One.

Last season, Mourinho was awarded a long-term contract - and former Manchester City star Mills believes it is strange they gave him such a deal without granting him financial backing.

Mills said on Sky Sports' The Debate: "I think it's very strange that the club didn't back him.

"They gave him a long-term contract and then didn't give him the funds to invest.

"OK he might have made mistakes in the transfer market but what manager hasn't done that. He clearly wanted some centre-halves.

"He clearly wanted to bolster his defence, who he could then play how he wanted them to play. That didn't happen.

"The defence changes week-in, week-out and they're conceding goals for fun."

Under Mourinho, United have signed two centre-backs in Victor Lindelof and Eric Bailly.

But both have been struck by injuries this season, with the former out until next year with a hamstring injury.

Bailly has found himself on the periphery this season but he has still yet to find full fitness after a series of niggling problems.

Meanwhile, Mourinho’s ongoing spat with Paul Pogba continues to cast a long shadow over the club this season.

A club source told Starsport: “Paul is confused because he’s not the only one to have struggled to produce his best in recent weeks.

"But he feels like he’s been singled out for special treatment and been made an example of.

"It’s all a bit humiliating considering his status in the game.”
