Richie Wellens felt Swindon deserved victory over Newport

Swindon manager Richie Wellens felt his side were good value for their 2-1 Sky Bet League Two win at home to Newport.

Kaiyne Woolery struck the decisive goal eight minutes from time to fire the Robins to their third straight league victory.

Wellens, who has now lost only one of his four league matches in charge, said: “The real moments of quality came from us.

“They have got long throws, putting everything into the box and it was difficult to deal with but the moments of quality were from us.

“We came in at half-time and were disappointed we were not three up, I think we let them off the hook.

“We know that if we stand off teams in this league, they’re not going to cut us open with their passing, they’re going to put it in our box.

“What I don’t want is us dropping off. We’ve worked hard and as soon as we defend we get up.”

Swindon came flying out the traps and took the lead with barely a minute on the clock.

Michael Doughty controlled Kyle Knoyle’s cross neatly before spinning and rifling into the far corner with a fine left-foot finish.

It could have been 2-0 when Joe Day pushed an Elijah Adebayo effort onto the post while Doughty also came close with a 35-yard effort.

Newport took a leaf out of Swindon’s book by equalising a minute into the second half.

Padraig Amond nodded a Tyreeq Bakinson cross past stranded home goalkeeper Lawrence Vigouroux.

Just when it looked as if Swindon were going to be left frustrated, Doughty turned from goalscorer to provider by setting up Woolery’s winner.

Woolery collected a pin-point Doughty pass before rounding Day and slotting the ball into the empty net.

It was the perfect way for Woolery to mark his comeback from injury – though not for Newport manager Michael Flynn.

Flynn moaned: “To concede a goal after 64 seconds is poor. It’s inexcusable. The amount of time he had to bring the ball down and get a shot off.

“It’s not good enough. We could have easily conceded three in the first half. We got a reaction in the second half but it doesn’t mean anything when you go and lose the game.

“The conditions helped us in the second half. The goal they scored – how the linesman gave a throw to them when everybody in the stadium has seen it’s a throw to us.

“It is inexcusable because it is two yards in front of him.”
