Barnet boss John Still delighted with FA Cup win over Stockport

John Still hailed Barnet’s battling qualities as they made it through to the FA Cup third round with a 1-0 win over Stockport.

The Bees can look forward to taking their place in the last 64 for the first time since 2008 after winger Dan Sparkes’ eighth-minute header settled matters at the Hive.

National League side Barnet withstood everything that their opponents from a division lower threw at them, leaving veteran manager Still elated.

“It’s a great day for us. We had to battle really hard,” said the Bees chief. “It was a proper cup tie here. The spirit of the players never wavered.

“We said to the players before the game that they need to apply every ounce of effort and determination that they have, and if you do that, you won’t look back thinking you could have given any more.

“But what they gave was fantastic.”

Cheye Alexander’s delivery from the right flank allowed Sparkes to nod home the only goal of the game early on.

Josh Walker’s long-range strike was tipped over the bar by Ben Hinchliffe while Ash Palmer’s header was the closest Stockport came to an equaliser.

County boss Jim Gannon said: “In terms of our effort, the way the players went about their business and the purpose they showed; Barnet definitely knew they were in a game today.

“There wasn’t an awful lot between the sides and we need to be proud of what we have achieved in the FA Cup.”
