Robinson looking forward to big tie in FA Cup third round

Oxford’s Liverpool-born manager Karl Robinson is keeping his fingers crossed for a big FA Cup third round tie after winning 2-1 at League One rivals Plymouth.

Robinson admits he is looking forward to Monday’s draw and hopes his side draw a big club as opponents.

He said: “We don’t really mind who we get. It would be great to get Liverpool or one of the big four.”

Oxford edged through by scoring twice early in the second half.

James Henry smashed home from close range before Cameron Brannagan netted from outside the box with a superb strike to beat six foot seven Matt Macey in the Argyle goal.

Antoni Sarcevic replied in the 67th minute to set up a thrilling finale, in which Plymouth sub Ruben Lameiras’ stoppage time shot came back off the pot.

Robinson admitted: “It is not nice when you are stood on that touchline in the final minutes.

“We showed a naivety to some of the things that we did but I am so pleased for the players in the way they saw the game out. It’s a win and we are in the next round of the FA Cup.

“I know their (Plymouth’s) performances haven’t been great but they are a good team, they have got really good players and this is a fantastic football club.

“The fans create a wonderful atmosphere and it was a difficult place to play. It was the first big real result this team has produced away from home. Not performance, result.

“We came up against a proper league team that we would consider a difficult ask for our players and they stood up to the challenge.

“Hopefully the players see how passionate I am regarding this competition.

“Did Plymouth really want to come to Oxford on a Tuesday night? They showed that they did. They still wanted to be in this competition just as much as anyone else.

“We are very fortunate to still be in it and we will be watching the draw on Monday. I am sure the board will have their fingers crossed.”

Argyle boss Derek Adams said: “I thought we were very good today. I am sure Karl Robinson would have said that.

“We were the better team, we had double the chances that Oxford had and they are obviously very fortunate to go through to the next round of the cup because we controlled good spells in the game.

“We were unfortunate not to have gone ahead in the game in the first half with the chances Joel Grant and Freddie (Ladapo) had. We needed to take our chances.

“Over the 90 minutes we have just lost the two goals, which were poor from our point of view.

“The first one we could have cleared before it got to our 18 yard box and then we don’t close down the long range shot quick enough as well.

“But we scored a good goal, a good cross and Sarcevic makes a good run into the box.

“Over the 90 minutes it was a thoroughly good performance from us and was back to the form we showed against Fleetwood, on the front foot.

“It was night and day compared to the performance at Shrewsbury.

“We needed to score in the first half. It’s a cup tie and always getting the first goal is going to be beneficial.”
