Offrande Zanzala made the difference as Accrington secured a place in the FA Cup third round with a 3-1 win over League Two Cheltenham.
It needed Zanzala’s introduction after the break to make an impact for the League One Reds after a dull opening 45 minutes of football.
Within four minutes of coming on, the Congolese striker headed home Sean McConville’s cross into the area from close range for his sixth goal of the season.
Zanzala continue to be a threat for the home side and he won a penalty in the 65th minute when he was brought down by a challenge from Jordon Forster, which Billy Kee, on his 28th birthday, smashed into the net.
However, Chelenham hit back with 17 minutes remaining when Chris Clements found substitute Alex Addai to fire home after beating his marker.
That set up a tense finale for Stanley manager John Coleman and assistant Jimmy Bell in their 1000th match as a management team, but Jordan Clark ensured their place in the next round.
The winger played a neat one-two with Kee before taking the ball around Scott Flinders to fire into the empty net.
