Steve Evans hails Marcus Maddison strike as Peterborough return to winning ways

Steve Evans hailed match-winner Marcus Maddison after a wonder-strike earned Posh victory.

Maddison spectacularly hit his first goal of the season with a 25-yard strike on the hour mark as the play-off chasers saw off lowly AFC Wimbledon to climb into fourth place in Sky Bet League One.

Victory was Posh’s first in the league in four games but it was a tense watch for manager Evans, who watched the game from the stands as he served a touchline ban.

Evans said: “We’re getting Marcus back to his best and it was a great goal worthy of winning the game.

“He gave us great penetration and I felt Wimbledon were terrified of him when he had the ball around their box.

“But if we had our shooting boots on tonight Matt could easily have gone home with the match ball.

“Had we got the second goal I feel sure we would have gone on to win comfortably, but the fact we haven’t been winning games at home has created a bit of pressure.

“The boys were saying they were feeling a bit nervous so I’m pleased for them and that the mini-slump is over.

“To be honest I’m also pleased I was serving a suspension tonight as I would probably have been sent off again.

“I honestly can’t work out why the referee has not given us two penalties, but I have to watch what I say as I’ve been in trouble for my media comments recently.”

Wimbledon have lost six away league games in a row and interim boss Simon Bassey was frustrated they could not build on Saturday’s win at home to Southend.

“We limited a very good Peterborough team to very few chances,” he said.

“We had to open the game up after falling behind and the fact one of our substitutes got injured left us pretty much playing with 10 men.

“I still felt we created enough situations towards the end of the game to force home and equaliser, but ultimately it was a case of our quality letting us down.

“It would have been fantastic not to get beaten after the win last Saturday, but we came here with the intention of winning the game.

“The aim was to try to do that by keeping things nice and tight for most of the night. We managed to do that on the whole, but we had to do better for the Peterborough goal.

“We know what a talented boy Maddison is and it’s no surprise he sticks his shot into the top corner after we allowed him to come inside.”
