Oxford boss Robinson hails Browne after Rochdale win

Oxford boss Karl Robinson believed two-goal Marcus Browne should have finished with at least a hat-trick in the U’s 4-2 win over Rochdale at the Kassam Stadium.

The victory lifted Oxford to 19th in Sky Bet League One.

The win had a lot to do with a flying start as the hosts went two goals up in 14 minutes, but Browne was the architect behind so much of the home team’s bright attacking play.

He made one, then struck in the 52nd and 78th minutes, and so nearly finished with the match ball, seeing several other shots go close.

Jamie Mackie and James Henry scored United’s other goals as they recorded a fourth successive home league victory.

Robinson said: “Our performance wasn’t too dissimilar to the first 25 minutes at Bradford last Saturday, it was just that this time we made it count.

“Everyone is drooling about Marcus Browne’s performance, and rightly so. But he could, and should, have got three or four goals, and I’ve told him that.

“There’s more to come from Marcus – and that’s how good he is.”

Robinson added: “I’ve just been told that it’s the first time in 13 years that we’ve won four consecutive league games at home, which shows what a good achievement it is.

“I think we’ve found our level of performances now.

“Our work ethic was the best I’ve seen, after what was potentially a quite demoralising result last Saturday.

“And I was really happy with Marcus’s first goal because I’ve been telling our forwards on the training ground to make those kinds of runs.”

Rochdale manager Keith Hill felt he got clarity in his thinking as some of the players he brought in failed to take their chance.

Dale made five changes, but at the back they struggled at times – especially against Browne.

“Strangely enough, it’s been a good night for me,” Hill said, “because I my mind’s now clear.

“I know what I’ve got now, rather than what I see on the training ground.

“Different players were given opportunities, but we haven’t done it individually.

“We were quite good offensively, but we didn’t do enough to stop our opponents.

“We made one or two changes in the way we play for this game, so it was all set up, but I was let down, to be honest, by a few players defensively.

“And there was a bit of ill-discipline, with the number of yellow cards, which disappoints me.

“It’s a poor result, but we go again on Sunday.”

Dale face a tough FA Cup test against in-form Portsmouth on Sunday.

Their goals against Oxford came from Ian Henderson, with his 13th of the season, and a long-range strike from Callum Camps.
