Grimsby hit five past high-flying Tranmere

Grimsby Town brought up their biggest win since 2016 as they thrashed promotion hopefuls Tranmere Rovers 5-2 to ease their worries at the foot of League Two.
Tranmere found themselves ahead early on as the ball skidded through nicely for James Norwood to latch onto, enabling him to chip over the onrushing James McKeown for his 14th league goal of the season.
Harry Clifton headed home from Charles Vernam’s cross to bring the hosts back level, before Grimsby found themselves ahead just before half-time, although there was more than a suspicion of handball as Wes Thomas bundled home from Vernam’s ball across the face of goal.
And just moments after the break, Grimsby extended their lead when Harry Davis poked home from a corner, before Paul Mullin pulled one back for Tranmere with a superb strike from distance.
But Grimsby came storming back as Mitch Rose added a fourth from the penalty spot late on, before Elliot Embleton rounded off the scoring with a fifth as he slotted home in stoppage time.
