Duff allows players five minutes to celebrate rare Cheltenham home league win

Michael Duff allowed his Cheltenham players five minutes to savour a rare home league win before beginning preparations for Tuesday’s trip to Bury.

But the Robins boss did admit it was a relief to pick up a first home victory of the season in League Two as they beat Newport 2-1.

Goals from Will Boyle and Tyrone Barnett were enough against an out-of-sorts Newport, who replied through Antoine Semanyo’s late strike after Mickey Demetriou missed a penalty in front of the travelling fans.

“I have already starting thinking about Bury and I’ve looked at their team and their result,” Duff said.

“I didn’t think the referee helped us today and I was a bit annoyed walking off the pitch, but we won the game.

“I enjoyed the moment with the players for five minutes, but it’s a line drawn underneath it now and it’s in the past.”

Duff praised on-loan striker Barnett, who netted for the third match in succession as Cheltenham extended their unbeaten run to seven games in all competitions.

“I thought Ty was excellent and it was no surprise they changed at half-time, adding another centre-half to deal with his physicality,” Duff said.

“He deserved his goal and he’s doing something we’ve asked him to do a bit more, which is getting between the posts.

“I thought he was spending too much time outside the goal and his two finishes in two games now have been one-touch finishes.

“He’s done great and it’s pleasing because he’s a foil and he does get battered from pillar to post.”

Exiles boss Mike Flynn was quick to take the blame for his side’s defeat as they dropped out of the top three.

They had won three games in a row in all competitions, but last week’s 2-0 win over Colchester remains their only league victory since October 13.

“I am going to take it on the chin and it’s my fault we lost,” he said.

“I picked the wrong team in the first half and I didn’t pick it because I wanted to, I kind of had to.

“In the first half Cheltenham did a job on us. They were very professional and we didn’t win one second ball in the first half, but I got the team wrong.

“The positives were Mark O’Brien and Andrew Crofts coming through 45 minutes and they were both superb, so those are only positives today.

“Cheltenham were strong, professional and played to their strengths. They were very direct and we didn’t handle it.”
