Adams: Victory was thoroughly deserved

Plymouth boss Derek Adams was delighted with his side as they bounced back from a 5-1 League One defeat at Luton to claim a “thoroughly deserved” victory over  Fleetwood.

Striker Freddie Ladapo netted twice for relegation-battling Plymouth in the final 18 minutes before Paddy Madden pulled one back for the visitors at Home Park.

Fleetwood could not find an equaliser in the final six minutes as Argyle earned a morale-boosting 2-1 win in the wake of their Luton mauling.

Adams said: “We only made one enforced change from last week’s team, which shows the faith I have in this group of players.

“Both sides at the start of the game were looking at each other and seeing who was going to make the first move and fortunately for us we did that.

“In the second half we got a goal, a well taken one in fact from Freddie, and went on to get a second soon after.

“The second goal gave us breathing space.”

Ladapo took his season’s tally to 10 goals with his double. He opened the scoring in the 72nd minute, firing home after cutting in from the left, having only moments before hit the right-hand upright.

He doubled his tally to head home from a corner after 81 minutes and could have had a hat-trick if not for another brilliant Alex Cairns save.

Cairns had kept Plymouth at bay in the first half with four top-class saves.

Madden scored a late consolation goal for Town before Yann Songo’o hit the post for Plymouth.

Adams added: “We did well in the second half, getting the ball up to Freddie.

“I thought Ryan (Taylor) did well for us when he came on because he occupies defenders and take the ball further up the pitch for us. Freddie is always one that can run in behind, off the shoulder of defenders, and get in behind and score.

“We could have got a couple more, we hit the post twice, but over the 90 minutes a thoroughly deserved victory for us.

“Tactically we did very well to stop their threat because they have got some exciting players.

“It went a bit to-and-fro at times and they always looked capable of scoring; Madden and (Ched) Evans upfront are a potent strikeforce.”

Fleetwood boss Joey Barton believes Plymouth’s heavy defeat to Luton helped motivate the Pilgrims.

He said: “Plymouth are scrapping away and in the bottom four. Obviously getting a little bit of a runaround against Luton last week was enough to galvanise them.

“In terms of us I am disappointed because we lacked that little bit of quality and composure which is surprising for us.

“Momentum is key in any football match and you see a couple of opportunities to maybe test their keeper and force him to make a save and you don’t take them.

“The first goal was crucial, we had a little bit of a let off, player dribbling in our own half which is not what he had been advised today.

“The key for us is just sticking to what we do, we found ourselves 1-0 down and were probably unfortunate to do so because Alex Cairns made a couple of good stops beforehand.

“It is disappointing because we felt it was a winnable game but it turned out not to be so.

“At 2-0 it was backs to the wall, but fair play to the lads they got a goal back and they never stopped going until the end.”
