Mark Cooper: Little Forest Green two points off the automatic promotion places

Manager Mark Cooper hopes the Forest Green fans are enjoying the ride after they moved to within a point of the League Two promotion spots with a 2-1 win at Carlisle.

Goals from Ben Morris and Carl Winchester returned Rovers to winning ways after back-to-back league defeats and a run of five games without a victory in all competitions.

Jamie Devitt’s penalty set up a tense last 13 minutes for the visitors but Cooper’s men held on.

“Some of our football was fantastic today, the movement and the passing,” Cooper said.

“Little Forest Green, two points off the automatic promotion places. The supporters should feel proud of their players.

“We kept the ball off Carlisle for long periods of time. It’s about grit and determination and rolling your sleeves up. The build up was a bit different and I just asked them for a little bit of spirit.

“When you play like that you need to be calm. We need the fans to get on board and at the moment we are getting things right.

“All 14 players showed guts and determination to come to a difficult place and get three points.”

“With loads of possession in the first half I was disappointed it was only 1-0.

“We managed to get a second goal and it looked like we would see it out comfortably until the referee decided to make a game of it. I’m still trying to work out what he gave the penalty for.”

Carlisle assistant manager Tommy Wright had no complaints about the result, that leaves the hosts with just one home league win since August.

He also felt he had watched the Cumbrians take on “the best team we have played all season”.

“The best team won,” Wright said. “Sometimes you just have to take results like this on the chin.

“We worked on how they play. They are a good team on the ball and we didn’t press enough in the first half. We were off the pace.

“The second goal killed it. Their keeper made a good save and we hit the post, but they are the best team we have played all season.

“We need to get some consistency in our play. You can’t give good teams a goal start. We need to get another run going.

“It’s a long season and you never know what can happen. You have to keep things in perspective, but our home form is letting us down. We are making chances but just not taking them.”
