Stendel happy after Barnsley battle back to claim point

Barnsley boss Daniel Stendel was satisfied with a draw after seeing his side held 1-1 at home by Doncaster which denied the hosts a sixth consecutive League One win.

Herbie Kane put the visitors ahead before Cauley Woodrow levelled for the hosts in the South Yorkshire derby.

After an evenly contested first half, Doncaster took the lead six minutes after the restart. The ball was won on the right side and James Coppinger aimed a perfect cross to Kane who headed in from seven yards out.

In the 62nd minute Barnsley were level. Brad Potts nodded on a free-kick to substitute Woodrow who poked the ball past the goalkeeper to level the scores within two minutes of his introduction.

Fifteen minutes from the end, Alfie May missed a golden opportunity to win the game for Doncaster, blazing his effort over from 10 yards out.

Stendel said: “I think in the end we can be satisfied with the draw. Compliments to Doncaster as they were very good. We played good, but not good enough win this game in the end.

“It’s okay, we can’t play well every week. The last week was good and all the last games we played very well. Today was okay and we didn’t lose, but it’s okay and we look forward to the next game.

“I’m happy not only for him (Cauley Woodrow), I’m happy for the team. We decided not to play him in the first 11 today and I said last week and the week before we have a good squad. Today he does what a striker does and he scored.

“The first half was 50/50. We didn’t give up and we made it 1-1. We want to win, but today Doncaster were very good and that is why we are satisfied with the draw.”

Doncaster manager Grant McCann was unhappy his side did not take a victory.

He said: “I thought we did very well and I’m disappointed we didn’t get all three (points).

“I thought our performance typified what we’re all about. We wanted to come here and make sure we attacked Barnsley. We weren’t going to sit back and let Barnsley attack us.

“We’re probably unfortunate to come away with a 1-1, but it is what it is but we won’t get too down about it and we’ll move on to the next one.

“I was a wee bit disappointed at half-time. I thought we had some good spells, but we got to their final third and we were a little bit loose on the last pass, a little bit loose on the finishing.

“I said the boys at half-time to concentrate in the final third. They took the message and Herbie arrived in the box. It was a good ball from Coppinger and it was a good finish.”
