Lampard: Rams not at their best but worth Wednesday win

Derby boss Frank Lampard admitted that his side were not at their best despite coming from behind to win 2-1 at Sheffield Wednesday.

Adam Reach put the home side in front before Derby hit back to win with goals from Harry Wilson and Jack Marriott.

“It was a tough game. We started slow, very slow and we weren’t at our best for big parts of the game,” Lampard admitted.

“But we’ve been near our best at times and not got results so it was an important change for us to find a way to win a game.

“We did it with two quality goals and competing in the second half when the balls were coming into our box.

“It wasn’t beautiful stuff from us but it was a very important three points.

“I think it was a pretty close game. They may feel they had some pressure in the second half with their direct stuff into the box which drops around and then you’re nervous but we also hit the bar in the first half and had breakaways and counter-attacks.

“Probably our last pass was slightly off in the second half. It doesn’t matter – we got the three points.”

The opening goal came in the 12th minute when Barry Bannan’s lofted delivery into the area found Reach on the right-hand side and he slotted the ball past Scott Carson from a narrow angle.

Derby equalised when Duane Holmes found Marriott inside the area and when his effort was blocked, the ball fell to Wilson (29), who hammered it beyond Cameron Dawson.

Marriott (35) scored the winner when he received the ball from Florian Jozefzoon, got in between a couple of defenders, advanced into the area and slotted past Dawson.

After Morgan Fox headed over from Fernando Forestieri’s corner, Derby went close to adding a third in first-half stoppage time when Marriott’s first-time effort hit the bar.

Forestieri wasted a great chance after receiving the ball from Reach, shooting wide from a good position inside the area.

Wednesday went close to an equaliser when Fox headed against a post.

Home boss Jos Luhukay said: “When you lose a game, you aren’t happy, you’re disappointed.

“I think in the first 30 minutes we played very good and came strong in the game. We made a good first goal from Adam and we tried to put pressure on.

“We lose after the 30 minutes. In five minutes, we gave away two goals too easily due to individual mistakes.

“We had a difficult time in the last 10 minutes before half time.

“In the second half, we tried to come back in the game. The team gave everything to the last minute and I think there were two or three very good chances to make the second goal.

“Fernando had maybe the best chance to score and Morgan Fox with his header to the post.

“We have not scored in the second half the important goal to come back.

“It’s very frustrating when we look back on the last six or seven games and see how easy we give goals away.”
