It’s getting like toothache – Hill urges Rochdale fans to get behind team

Keith Hill hit out at Rochdale’s silent supporters following his side’s 1-0 win against Accrington Stanley at the Crown Oil Arena.

Ian Henderson’s 62nd-minute header earned Dale the three points, stretching Stanley’s winless run to five games in League One.

And while Hill was delighted to edge a close contest, he was less than impressed with the home fans.

“Ian Henderson is like me, he’s been here a long time so that leaves you open to criticism and it seems to me that everyone wants to criticise him, criticise me, criticise the way we play, criticise us being in League One,” he said.

“The away supporters were right – this is a library. Create some atmosphere for God’s sake and support the team. It’s getting like toothache.

“It was a close game, it could have gone either way. Accrington are a good side and I love the way they play, the players they’ve got and the way they are building on the success they had last season. It was hard fought and could have gone either way.

“We had one or two skirmishes in what was an even game. We’ve come out on top but it doesn’t mean we are the better side, we were even all the way through. We scored a good goal and defended well on the day which obviously helps.”

Stanley were the better side in the first half, Dan Barlaser going close with a 25-yard drive in the opening minute and Billy Kee seeing Dale goalkeeper Josh Lillis save two shots in quick succession later in the half. Sean McConville was also denied by Lillis.

The second half was more even with Henderson’s glancing header from Matt Done’s corner proving the difference.

Rochdale managed the game well after Henderson’s goal, denying Stanley any further chances while going close to a second when Stephen Dooley flashed a delivery across the face of goal which only just eluded Calvin Andrew.

“On the balance of play I thought we should have won – the least we deserved was a draw. But you don’t always get what you deserve in football,” said Stanley boss John Coleman on his return to the club he managed between January 2012 and January 2013.

“They’ve got a lad there who recently scored his 100th goal for Rochdale and you give him half a chance and he’ll take it. He’s one of the smallest players on the pitch and we’ve let him scored a header.

“We had plenty of chances and didn’t take them and that was the difference in the game.

“I felt we forced the best chances but unfortunately we didn’t work their goalkeeper enough. Our keeper hasn’t had a save to make while their keeper made two in the first half and I can’t remember him making a save after that, so we have to be more ruthless in front of goal.”
