Richie Wellens pleased with Swindon’s endeavour in win at Port Vale

Richie Wellens was pleased with Swindon’s endeavor as he picked up his first three points as the club’s boss with a 1-0 Sky Bet League Two win at Port Vale.

In a scrappy contest, Elijah Adebayo’s strike early on got the Robins off to a great start at Vale Park, and his goal would earn Wellens his inaugural victory after succeeding Phil Brown in the County Ground hotseat.

Wellens said: “I’m obviously really pleased with the result, I thought in the first half we were very good, just a little bit away from being very good.

“We lacked that ruthless streak and we should be coming in two or three up, and in the second half we’ve had to defend a lot, so credit to the boys at the back and the goalkeeper, they put their bodies on the line when needed.

“I’d like us to be more composed, but in terms of the effort and application I was very pleased.”

It took Swindon 11 minutes to take the lead after Adebayo struck from close range when home goalkeeper Scott Brown parried Scott Twine’s backheeled volley into his path.

Keshi Anderson later pulled his shot wide for the visitors before Neil Aspin’s Vale responded through Tom Conlon shooting straight at Lawrence Vigouroux in the Town goal, and Tom Pope’s header which went off-target.

After the break, Vale began the stronger team in front of their own supporters, with substitute Louis Dodds chancing his luck from 25 yards before Ben Whitfield drove in from the right only to have his shot charged down.

Pushing for their late leveller, Connell Rawlinson saw his header from Conlon’s corner cleared off the line by Steven Alzate prior to Swindon surviving an added time ariel bombardment to earn their first three points of the Wellens era to move up to 14th in the table.

Port Vale boss Neil Aspin was frustrated at his side’s “terrible” display.

He said: “It was very frustrating. I’m not here to come out and make excuses for our poor performance.

“I thought in the first half we were terrible and were deservedly behind, it was unacceptable, and in the second half we haven’t made enough chances or worked their goalkeeper, we played too many long balls.

“We were relying on Tom Pope to make something happen, we haven’t taken enough responsibility to make some chances, there’s no excuses, it’s not been good enough and the blame lies with us.”
