Henderson earns Rochdale victory over Accrington and former boss Coleman

Ian Henderson’s 62nd-minute header handed Rochdale a 1-0 win over former boss John Coleman and his Accrington Stanley side.

Coleman managed Dale from January 2012 for 12 months and this was his first time back at Spotland.

His team had the better of the first-half chances, Dan Barlaser testing Josh Lillis in the opening minute and the Dale goalkeeper making a terrific double save to deny striker Billy Kee later on.

Jordan Clark also struck a shot into the side-netting having raced in behind the home defence, while Sean McConville was close to picking Dale’s pocket when he snuck in at the back post only to be denied by Lillis.

Barlaser blasted over the crossbar at the start of the second half but the home team went close themselves when Joe Rafferty’s shot only just cleared the woodwork.

The deadlock was broken just after the hour when Henderson’s run across the face of goal was not tracked and he glanced Matt Done’s corner beyond Connor Ripley in the Stanley goal.

Dale went close again through Calvin Andrew but in the end Henderson’s goal proved enough.
