Evans bemoans missed chances after Peterborough held by Coventry

Steve Evans was left to bemoan his side’s missed chances as Peterborough missed the chance to go second in Sky Bet League One with a 1-1 draw against Coventry.

Conor Chaplin’s dramatic equaliser cancelled out Ivan Toney’s 89th minute goal and left Evans feeling the blues in a game where he believed they should have won comfortably.

He said: “It’s not just the equaliser is it, we should have won five nothing. We’ve come here and gave them an absolute hiding. The opposition manager will say different but we should have been three up at half-time, should be five up at one stage of the game when we get the goal to go in front.

“The local radio station says we are in a mini-crisis. Have you watched us and how we play? It was a mini-crisis last year when you couldn’t win games.

“No we’re in a crisis, because Steve Evans isn’t top of the table. When I came in we had 18 or 19 new players arrive. The boys have been absolutely magnificent, we should have won four or five tonight.”

The visitors missed several gilt-edged opportunities to win the game, with Matt Godden twice being thwarted by Coventry keeper Lee Burge in the first half.

Evans added: “We’re not taking that chance when it comes along. We made enough chances to go two or three up, but we suffer with players’ lapses of concentration.”

Evans’ touchline antics were cautioned in the second half when Anthony Backhouse decided to award the Peterborough boss a yellow card.

The Peterborough manager said: “I was booked for shouting that it was a throw in. He said it was a stage one warning, for repeatedly shouting for decisions. Am I not allowed to shout? He wants to go watch Jurgen Klopp, he wants to go watch (Pep) Guardiola, he wants to go watch (Jose) Mourinho. Do they shout at decisions? They do. I don’t care.”

Coventry manager Mark Robins was relieved his side managed to snatch a point, but was frustrated as he felt it could have been all three.

He said: “I would have been devastated with a defeat and the manner of the goal that they scored which we gave them, it would have been harsh.

“It was brilliant to get back in, we showed great character right at the death, to get an equaliser so quickly after was brilliant.

“Conor Chaplin keeps his record up of getting late goals, certainly at home, which is good, but I’m still disappointed that we didn’t get all three points.”

The point halted the Sky Blues’ three game losing streak and lifts them into the play-off places, and Robins was encouraged by the result.

He added: “The only downside of it is that we didn’t take one of our chances or the final pass was not quite right.

“They’ve shown great character again. I’m delighted because it felt like two points lost when we were 0-0, but then to score a goal, with both goals coming late on, I’m glad we’ve scored, I’m glad we’ve got on the scoresheet.”
