Powell admits Southend do it hard way after replay win over Crawley

Southend boss Chris Powell admitted his side did not do things the easy way after they booked an FA Cup second round tie at home to Barnsley with a 6-2 extra time victory at Crawley.

The Shrimpers scored four times in extra time to advance to the second round for the first time since 2013.

Goals from Simon Cox, John White, Sam Mantom and Stephen McLaughlin in extra time clinched it for Southend after Crawley came back from 2-0 down to force added time.

A Josh Doherty own goal and a close range strike from Harry Bunn put Southend 2-0 before Ollie Palmer scored twice in the second half to take his season`s tally to 11 goals.

Powell admitted: “We don`t do things easy; like most managers I would have preferred a 1-0.

“Crawley`s second goal was offiside but I am not going to complain. In extra time we looked fitter and classier.

“It was a long night and especially for the fans who had come all this way, but we are now looking forward to a home tie against Barnsley.

“It will be difficult but it is cup football. It won`t be easy but we will be ready.”

Crawley forced a replay with a late White own goal at Roots Hall and Powell said: “They were plucky but we got through it. The fans were singing that they wanted seven in the end and this will give us confidence.”

Crawley head coach Gabriele Cioffi insisted his men had to look forward after the heavy defeat left them without a win in seven games in all competitions.

The Italian said: “It is a bad moment and we know this but I think we have to look forward.

“I think together we can build and that is what it is about. At the moment we are in a phase when we are challenging the pain.”

Crawley have exited in the first round for five successive seasons and Cioffe said he was more upset for the players than for himself.

He added: “In the first half we didn`t play and conceded silly goals. But in the second half we showed character and deserved to come back.

“I am upset. I`m more upset for the players than myself.

“It does not matter that Southend were in a league above us. They are physically strong and have pace, but it was the way we reacted.

“Now after a tough 120 minutes we need to recover and be ready for our home game against Crewe. We will be aiming to bounce back.”
