Morecambe manager Bentley describes FA Cup defeat as all-time low

Jim Bentley described his Morecambe side’s 1-0 defeat to FC Halifax Town as an all-time low as the Shrimps crashed out of the FA Cup.
Cameron King’s 12th minute strike, after being played in by Dayle Southwell, saw the National League side stun their visitors in the first round replay, setting up a home tie with AFC Wimbledon.
A lacklustre Morecambe struggled to get going, leaving the Football League’s longest-serving manager disconsolate.
“Credit to Halifax – they flew out of the blocks, got after us and hit us on the counter-attack,” said Bentley, manager since 2011.
“We didn’t get the final third stuff right and failed to work their keeper enough.
“When we did get it right, they were getting good blocks in or we hit one of our own players.
“I feel embarrassed for the fans for the way we’ve been. I’m bitterly disappointed – it’s an all-time low for me.”
Defeat is Morecambe’s fifth in the first round for six years, while Town reached the second round for just the second time in a decade.
“We showed real quality in possession, guile and intelligence,” said Halifax manager Jamie Fullarton.
“But when you’re only leading 1-0 it’s always going to be a test of character and the players – to a man – responded.
“Being on TV, the revenue that brings and the opportunity to play Wimbledon, a League One club, is vital.
“It’s great to add to the history of the club and these players are looking to go further and get into the third round for the first time.”
