Newport leapfrogged League Two promotion rivals Colchester after securing a 2-0 victory at Rodney Parade.
Jamille Matt netted his 11th goal of the season to edge Mike Flynn’s side in-front before Cameron Pring kept his cool to double the lead and secure their first league win in four matches.
Former Newport striker Frank Nouble registered the only shot on target during a dull first-half.
Newport lost winger Robbie Willmott to a pulled hamstring after 34 minutes, before referee Roger East brought an uneventful half to a close.
The deadlock was finally broken after 54 minutes when Padraig Amond flicked Matty Dolan’s left-footed corner on at the front post to give strike partner Matt a simple close-range volley to make it 1-0.
It got even better for the hosts 13 minutes later when Tyreeq Bakinson slid a throughball behind the defence to allow Bristol City loanee Pring to slot home his first goal in the football league to secure three points.
