Madden double for Fleetwood sends Alfreton packing in FA Cup

A brace from Paddy Madden meant Alfreton’s big day ended in heartbreak as they were swept aside 4-1 by League One’s Fleetwood in the FA Cup.
The National League North side were vying to reach the second round proper for just the third time in their history, but the Cod Army had too much firepower at their disposal.
It took just 14 minutes for the visitors to take the lead as Madden scored his seventh goal of the season with a brilliant first-time finish from Lewis Coyle’s cross.
And Madden turned provider for the second as Ash Hunter coolly slotted home eight minutes later, before Sam Ramsbottom produced a fine save to prevent Jason Holt making it 3-0 at half-time.
Then, just before the hour, Hunter was tripped in the box, with Madden making no mistake from the spot – firing down the middle for Fleetwood’s third of the afternoon.
Alfreton piled everyone forward to give their fans something to cheer about.
Alex Cairns pulled off a couple of fine saves to deny Richard Peniket either side of Jordan Sinnott smashing home a superb free-kick from 25 yards.
And he was once again called into action to keep out Callum Chettle before Fleetwood substitute Gerard Garner added gloss to the win with his first goal for the club in stoppage time.
