Summerfield and Beavon on target as Wrexham reach the second round

National League leaders Wrexham battled through to the second round of the FA Cup as they won 2-0 against National League South strugglers Weston-super-Mare.

Second half goals from Luke Summerfield and Stuart Beavon proved enough for the Welsh side to break Weston’s spirited resistance.

But the Somerset outfit – who have only won once in the league all season – gave a good account of themselves.

And Weston had a brilliant early chance to take the lead in the second minute as Jarrod Welch crossed for Ben Swallow, but the winger blazed his shot over the bar from 15 yards.

Early in the second half it was former Coventry striker Beavon who set up Summerfield to open the scoring for Wrexham in the 51st minute.

Beavon pounced on a poor clearance from the home side and laid the ball off for Summerfield to find the bottom corner with a low left-footed shot from the left-hand side of the penalty area.

Weston had a chance to hit back straight away, but Alex Byrne headed over from close range.

And Beavon doubled Wrexham’s lead after 81 minutes, volleying in at the second attempt after his initial shot was saved by keeper Luke Purnell.
