Michael Flynn unhappy with ‘sloppy’ Newport despite FA Cup win over Met Police

Michael Flynn called his Newport side “sloppy” despite watching them ease past non-league Metropolitan Police with a 2-0 win to progress to the second round of the FA Cup.

Goals from Padraig Amond and Jamille Matt dashed the hopes of Met Police, who finished with 10 men after Louis Birch was sent off.

But Exiles boss Flynn was less than impressed after the final whistle, criticising his players for failing to put the game to bed after missing chances to make the scoreline more emphatic.

“I thought we were sloppy,” he said. “It was nothing to do with the weather, we were poor. They are a great group of lads, but it was a poor performance and one I’m not happy with.

“We should have scored eight but I like to be disappointed sometimes even when we win. I set very high standards and I have got that much faith in them that when they fall below the standards it’s disappointing.

“The main thing is we are through. It’s more money for the football club and hopefully we get a home draw in the next round.”

Ethan Chislett could have levelled for the hosts after Amond had given County the lead – and Met manager Gavin Macpherson took plenty of positives from his side’s performance.

“We really caused some problems and I’ve got two forwards that have been fantastic for me and have been scoring goals freely at our natural level, but it wasn’t our day,” he said.

“If we do take one of those chances it becomes a different game of football.”
