Dowson sets sights on Sunderland after Woking see off Torquay

Woking manager Alan Dowson has a second-round glamour tie with Sunderland in his sights after his side battled to a 1-0 FA Cup win at Torquay.
Max Kretzschmar’s second-half penalty was enough for the Cards to prevail against their National League South counterparts, after Jamar Loza was felled by Niate.
Kalvin Lumbombo Kalala and Connor Lemonheigh-Evans came close for the hosts but neither could prevent Dowson from dreaming big ahead of Monday’s second-round draw.
“I want Sunderland in the next round – I’m from Gateshead and I’m a Sunderland supporter,” he said.
“I’ve been wanting to face Sunderland in over 20 years in management, so I would love to be able to play them.
“I thought our lads showed a lot of character to put our heads on things and block things.
“Did we deserve that? I’m not sure but I’m delighted with the character that we’ve shown.”
Torquay manager Gary Johnson was left licking his wounds but is hopeful a strong home showing is just around the corner.
“It’s very disappointing that we lost the game in front of nearly 3,000 supporters,” he admitted.
“We are trying very hard to get the club going again – but we didn’t take our opportunities and they took one of the couple that they had.
“The boys are disappointed because we are out of the cup and I’m gutted because I didn’t want to lose the game. The boys need to show a lot more and I think that they’ve got it.”
