Ian Henderson’s 100th goal for Rochdale proved decisive in a 2-1 FA Cup first-round victory over Gateshead.
Dale took the lead in the 21st minute when Jordan Williams and Henderson combined on the left before Henderson’s low cross was turned into the roof of the net by Gateshead defender Jon Mellish.
Within 60 seconds the home side had doubled their lead when Bradden Inman raced clear down the left wing and centred the ball for Henderson to slide home his 100th goal for the League One club.
The National League outfit earned themselves a lifeline within minutes of the restart.
Mellish fed a pass into Greg Olley on the edge of the area and his backheel flick completely bamboozled the Dale defence, leaving the advancing Mellish in the clear.
Dale goalkeeper Brandon Moore got a hand to his shot but could only parry it into the roof of the net.
Olley had a great chance to level the game up when Scott Boden’s flick on sent him one-on-one with Moore as he lifted the ball over the Dale stopper – but failed to get enough dip on his finish as it cleared the crossbar.
