Jack Ross hails Sunderland’s patience as Black Cats record fifth straight win

Jack Ross praised his Sunderland side’s patience as they notched a fifth successive Sky Bet League One win with a 2-0 at Plymouth

Aiden McGeady scored twice in the second half to seal Sunderland’s victory, which moved them up to second in the table.

He swept home a superb shot on the run in the 53rd minute and doubled his tally from the penalty spot with 12 minutes remaining.

Sunderland goalkeeper Jon McLaughlin made two top-class saves, palming a Graham Carey free-kick around the post and then swooping down to push in-form Freddie Ladapo’s goal-bound strike to safety with the score at 1-0.

McLaughlin also had assistance from an Adam Matthews goal-line clearance to clear a Yann Songo’o header from Carey’s corner.

Just as Argyle sensed a leveller, Tafari Moore collided with substitute Luke O’Nien and McGeady tucked away the spot kick, sending Matt Macey the wrong way and Sunderland on their way to victory.

Ross said: “With the exception of a 20-minute spell in the second half where we lost a little bit control of the game, that was maybe as good as we have played away from home in terms of dominating the game.

“I told them to be patient and continue to do the things we were good at and we started the second half brightly and ultimately that period led to our first goal.

“I thought we were good in the first half and they defended their box well and we got a little bit impatient and narrow in terms of trying to force thing through the middle of the pitch.

“We have been clinical this season and our forward players have been good. We always stress about width and possession in that final third because it stretches teams and we got a bit narrow.

“To the players credit they took on the information and that made the park bigger in that opening part of the second half.

“The boys have been good for me this season and at the moment they are churning out results which is a terrific place to be.”

Argyle boss Derek Adams was full of praise for his side as they belied their third-from-bottom position and showed the form that had earned them back-to-back wins going into the game.

“Over the 90 minutes, I think we were the better team,” Adams said.

“We had double the opportunities on goal that Sunderland had today.

“Their goalkeeper has had a man-of-the-match display and we went toe-to-toe with a team that has a lot of talent.

“They scored their goal just after half time and got a penalty that we thought was soft.

“We had a couple of claims for penalties we didn’t get and at the end of the day, I think we probably feel hard done by today.

“I don’t think a defeat is the right result. The stats show we had a lot more chances on goal than them.

“Their goalkeeper has been simply magnificent today and I think Sunderland’s players and management have got to thank him for their win.”
