Dino Maamria hopes comeback victory over Oldham gives Stevenage belief

Dino Maamria says Stevenage’s stunning comeback win over Oldham Athletic should convince his squad to “believe in themselves a bit more” and reach for the stars in League Two.

After his side hauled themselves back into the game twice, returning striker Danny Newton struck a late winner to send Boro into the play-off places.

Maamria was delighted with his side’s sixth home win of the season in all competitions and hopes their latest rousing result bolsters the belief of his players.

“I thought we showed a lot of character and we have to believe in ourselves a little bit more because we have a very good group of players,” he said.

“This group of players is capable of a lot and I want them to believe that as we move forwards.

“We looked a threat all game and we deserved to score three goals. Every time we went forward I thought we could score a goal.

“The players have worked their socks off and this group of players gives us work ethic and an honesty about their performances.

“We didn’t defend as well as we could have done at times but I’m pleased with the response to going behind.

“I think we just need to keep on improving and winning games at home.

“I’m glad we put in that performance for the fans because they’ve been fantastic and they’ve been right behind us all season.”

Joel Byrom and Kurtis Guthrie cancelled out goals from Ishmael Miller and Callum Lang either side of half-time in a display that showed plenty of character.

Newton, who missed Stevenage’s previous two outings with a knock, nodded home at the back post to condemn Oldham to a second-successive defeat in the fourth tier.

Latics boss Frankie Bunn felt losing the lead twice showed an uncharacteristic frailty in his team.

“They had had very few efforts on goal and we have had numerous chances and we managed to score two goals – and whenever you score two away from home you’d expect to come away with at least a point,” said the Boundary Park boss.

“That wasn’t like us because when we have taken the lead this season we have usually been able to see the game out – that wasn’t meant to be.

“We ran out of steam towards the end of the game and Stevenage are a big physical team and they are very good from set plays.

“We’ve just got to keep on plugging away and, although we think we have done enough today to get something out of the game, we haven’t.

“We have scored five goals in the last two games so it’s frustrating that we haven’t come away with anything but we move onto the next one now.”
