Macclesfield caretaker at a loss to explain their display against Bury

Caretaker Macclesfield manager Danny Whitaker struggled to explain his side’s deficiencies as they were overrun by Bury, who strolled to a 4-1 win.

Given their insipid performance the veteran midfielder couldn’t find ways to defend his players, insisting: “It’s extremely frustrating, going into the game we knew it was going to be tough, they are a really good team with good attacking players.

“But we’ve come off on the back of a 4-1 defeat, which hurts, I just hope it hurts them when they go home tonight.

“At two goals down you’re thinking ‘oh no, here we go’ but the lads rallied and Ben [Stephens] got the goal back and then you’re just thinking if we can keep in the game until half time we can regroup then go out and have a real good go in the second half.

“But all of the goals were sloppy. Bad decision making from numerous people, which is hard to explain. We ask them to go out, be honest and do the right things, we didn’t do that so it’s very frustrating.”

Bury captain Neil Danns fired them into a two-goal lead early on. Macclesfield hit back through Ben Stephens but Jay O’Shea killed off their hopes of a comeback just before the break and Nicky Maynard added insult to injury with Bury’s fourth on the hour mark.

And Shakers boss Ryan Lowe was delighted with their ruthlessness in shooting down their hapless hosts.

“I’m disappointed with the goal we conceded but when you come to Macclesfield and win 4-1 it means you’ve been ruthless,” he said.

“It was a game I was conscious about because of their league position but that doesn’t warrant where they are, they’re certainly not the worst team – they have a go, they may not have the quality at times but it was one of those games where you’re expected to win, it was no different today.

“We didn’t want to come here thinking it was going to be easy, it was going to be tough, but fair play to the lads, we’ve come away with the three points so I’m happy.

“Any early goal is massive, it sets the tone for the game and how it’s going to pan out. I thought we could have got one or two more but we’re disappointed with their one but we’ll take the four and take the three points.”
